When I think about the Holidays, I can't help but think of sparkles and glitter and lights . From decorations on Christmas Trees, Candles, Christmas lights, and one of my favorites - anything Sequins !!!! Above, is some of my favorite things that are sort of like my "inspiration" for this month - some items are uber-luxe ( if I had no budget - ie. that sparkly flower Miniaudiere) , along with some that are actually attainable. My favorites are the nail polishes of course !!! They're the most budget friendly way to feel fabulous , and also a VERY cost-effective stocking stuffer that you KNOW the recipient is GOING to use.

When it comes to hair this holiday season , instead of sticking to the same old routine (yawnssss) , why not try Spring trends ??

The past Spring 2012 Ready to Wear Shows featured so many great looks that are easily attainable . From the classic sleek ponytail, to the classic long part in the middle ( sans the typical routine ringlets everyone is opting for) , to glamourous Hollywood-inspired curls/waves ( which ever way you'd like to describe them) and the polar opposite : girl-next-door un-done hair, etc...

I think it would be fun to be "adventurous" and do the upcoming Spring Trends now in the Winter/Holiday season - isn't it about being "one step ahead of the rest" anyway??

Here are some of my favorite looks that I will be doing ( some I've already started to do) this Winter :

Classic Sleek Ponytail

This look is very easy to achieve , all you need to do is make sure that your hair has a very smooth base - which can be done with using the NEW Redken All Soft Argan-6 Oil prior to drying your hair , I like to use some after as well, only because I have very thick hair. You can further smooth out the hair with the help of a heat styling tool like Sultra Beauty's The Seductress Curl, Wave & Straight Iron - you can use this along the hair line especially - this is my favorite iron for straightening my hair. It does the job right everytime!! Make a side-part, and put our hair in a ponytail ( whether you leave the hair loose , create a braid, or chignon is really at your discretion), and the most important part is to finish it off with some Redken Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist - which has become a Fashion Week Backstage staple used by Lead Stylist Guido at almost every show since its release.

Classic Part in the Middle

( As seen at Chloé Spring 2012 RTW)

This look is so refreshing , because for the past couple of years the majority of times when we've seen a "part in the middle" with long locks it is accompanied by the "standard" ringlets. I love this look and how it looks so natural and free-flowing as if there was not much done to create it. The two main components needed for this look are - 1. Hair Extensions - ( if your natural hair length is not long) , and a large barrel curling iron to create this big loose bump in the hair. I've personally done this style and my go-to hair is by Pro Extensions. I use the Pro Extensions Pro Cute Clip In Extensions in 20" . Pro Cute Remy hair extensions still have its cuticle intact. An intact cuticle will have an appearance that is less shiny, but many consider to look more natural. Cuticle hair extensions have a more realistic texture than standard sets. However, it is still quite luxurious to touch, but in such a way that it will seamlessly meld with your own hair style. Cuticle hair blends beautifully with your natural hair. The cuticle will protect the hair shaft from UV light, heat, chemical hair products, dry conditions and other damaging environments. An intact cuticle will prevent the strands of hair from breaking and splitting, thereby thinning your set. So, I place the entire set of clip ins in my hair, then proceed to make big curls at just the ends with a large barrel iron - I personally use Brillance New York Clipless Curling Iron Triple Barrel with the 3.32 MM diamond infused barrel . To ensure that the curls are not "too done" I don't keep the sections of hair wrapped on the iron too tight or for too much time. You can further have the loose ends set with velcro- rollers or by pinning them - either method has worked for me. Since this look has a natural appeal , I don't even use any shine spray or holding spray to set the hair, I leave it "as is" but you can do what works for you.

Girl Next Door - Undone Hair

(As seen at Calvin Klein Spring 2012 RTW)

If you are a "less is more" type of girl, then this will be your favorite look to re-create. Like the style above, if your hair is not long in length - Hair Extensions will be in order. For this look, I would suggest using the Pro Extensions Pro Premier Remy Clip In Extensions. Let your hair air dry after washing , but if you must use a blow dryer , do not use a brush while drying, because you don't want the hair to be too straight or sleek - you want the hair to have some natural texture. Then , you place the clip-in extensions ( if needed). After the hair is all in place, you take 1" sections of the hair or you can even do a free-form and just grab pieces varying in size at a time , and curl them with Sultra Beauty's The Bombshell in the smaller 3/4" rod curling Iron. Making sure that you focus on the ends only - as it is displayed in the picture above, once all the desired pieces are curled, make sure to run your fingers through all the pieces because the look is supposed to look "un-done". Lightly spray the hair with Redken Wax Blast 10 to set the hair texture.

Hollywood-Inspired Waves

Ok, this look is nothing we have not seen before, but it's still very elegant and beautiful ,and when done right - it never gets old. For this look you will need Clip In Extensions ( given your hair is not long) in either the Pro Cute or Pro Premier Remy ( as both mentioned above) . Roller set your hair to dry it , once its dry, you then add in the Clip Ins ( optional). You then curl your hair in big sections , pinning each section to keep the curl in place. Once you remove all the pins, you can then lightly brush through the hair with a paddle brush ( if you can't afford the fabulous Pearson Mason Brush - any paddle will do). Set the hair with Wax Blast and add some shine with Shine Flash 02.

My Redken Shades EQ experience !!!

Last month I was lucky enough to have my hair colored with the latest Shades EQ system by Redken's very own Colorist David Stanko at the lavish Angelo David Salon here in NYC.

The hair consultation started off with David and I discussing what I would like to do with my color as I sipped on my cappucino. We both decided that I would just stay dark, but since I have some weird brassyness to my color ( some areas appear to be very light brown in bright lighting or in pictures - it really bothers me) , we would do more of a gloss to add shine, and get my color even.

To achieve this , David was going to use Shades EQ in Warm Sable Brown 05WN , along with Shades EQ in Crystal Clear . David mentioned that he was going to use a lot of the Crystal Clear, to add shine to my color. Shades EQ has Pomegranate Oil and Rice Protein as its main components - these ingredients moisturizes the hair. Maintenance should be done every 6 to 8 weeks, since this is a demi-permanent color.

I have chemically-treated ( I use relaxer to straighten my hair) hair, so David was so gracious as to tell me which Redken lines I SHOULD be using, and to my surprise , two of his suggestions I never thought I needed to use at all. For my hair type , the best Shampoo + Conditioner + Treatments to use are :

All Soft

Real Control

Nourishing repair for dense, dry, sensitized hair. This has been my favorite line to use since its release. I have grown to love this line, and that is why I never tried All Soft or Smooth Down before. I recommend this line for any one with Chemically Processed hair, or even Natural hair textures ( African American hair).

These are the three key lines to use for my hair type - moisture , moisture and more moisture is what I am to aim for when using products. David could not stress it enough!

The hair process continued with David's lovely assistant Mariano Cuevas following up by using Pureology hydrating Shampoo followed by Redken Chemistry Shot Phase in Real Control.

A new fun technique I learned to achieve a great blow dry is to dry the hair for a bit , before hand blow drying it in sections.

Blown Away was used before Mariano proceeded to dry my hair - another product I never thought of even using. After seeing the results it will be a staple in my "at home" hair process.

I sipped on a glass of wine while my hair was being dried - they know how to provide you with the ultimate "experience" at the Angelo David Salon .

Once my hair was completely dry, Mariano gave me curls , which he planned on pinning each in place while still hot so it could set. The main component to having my hair keep the curls was the use of one of my favorite Styling items - Wax Blast. He spritzed my whole head with it prior to curling my hair.

The last step was a sprinkling of Shine Flash 02 - the perfect end to all hair styling. Gives you that "perfect shine".

The latest Minx Celebrity spotting is from Dazed & Confused Magazine which features Beyoncé Knowles wearing Green Cheetah Minx on its July 2011 cover. New York celebrity nail stylist Lisa Logan applied Minx to Beyoncé for the shoot.

Lisa revealed that the theme of the shoot was “high-end meets trailer park” in which sexy meets trashy, and said when the stylists saw the Green Cheetah design, “they thought it was genius. They wanted to have fun with the shoot, and play off the bright colors Beyoncé would be wearing, and they were thrilled that they wouldn’t even have to change the Minx as it went with everything.” Lisa herself said she was more than excited with the choice, adding “sometimes as a nail stylist you don’t want to play it safe, and want to use something that walks on the wild side.”

Since I live in NYC, and we've been experiencing a heat-wave with temperature levels through the roof. The beach has been the place of serenity for many of us, but with the combination of the sun, sand, saltwater and the excessive washing your hair more times than average.. Pearls are timeless and can be worn all times of the year, but there's something about wearing pearls in the summer that will never get old. Last week Thursday I was fortunate enough to be able to be a part of Mally Roncal's Live UStream Broadcast , where she answered all of our beauty questions. I had three main concerns - What should I use on my skin as a bronzer without it giving me that " ashy" look? ( Because I am dark-skinned, a lot of the "Bronzing powders, etc.. do nothing for my complexion but makes it look dull) my second was - What is the best blush to appear vibrant on my dark skin ? ( like with bronzers, some blushes just appear white on my skin tone, or just don't appear in a flattering shade at all) , my third concern - How can I control the shine?

Mally came to my rescue answering all of my questions ( although she tried her best, not every question was answered in the short time frame) , and "prescribed" the perfect remedies from her line Mally Beauty.

Minx nails go Patriotic For 4th of July Weekend !

The most Patriotic day is just a few days away, and what better way to show your love for the "Red White and Blue" then taking your love and devotion to your fingertips?? MINX recently released ( less than a week ago ) - these seasonal designs for the "Fourth of July", and conveniently their debut is on the eve of the Holiday weekend.

I am LOVING the new "Fireworks" designs (above) , I think they would work well even for a non-Holiday weekend. I am considering getting this design done before the weeks end .. These designs are like a "party on your nails" they just scream "celebration", and I personally love having nail designs that make me feel "happy".

Inspiration for the "Flag/French Manicure" ... Beyonce in the "Telephone" video.

The "Flag / French Manicure" (above) design is inspired by the metallic American Flag design that Beyonce first wore as a custom design in the "Telephone" video she did with Lady Gaga in March of last year. I find this design a bit too "literal" and overkill with the Americana for my taste, but I know it would be a hit for a lot of other people. For some odd reason, I can also see Katy Perry wearing this design for a performance - or maybe she has already??

The "Patriotic Dots" (above) is very Americana as well, but done in a way that I prefer more than the "French" design. I love the Red Lightning center, paired with the minxlusion dots design on the top and bottom of the nail. I would not mind wearing this design on my nails- knowing myself I would choose a non-Holiday weekend to wear something so "patriotic"

The "4th of July Confetti" (above) design is very cute as well, I can see myself wearing this design with "Silver Lightning" on alternate nails. Like the fireworks design, these just scream party!

Whatever design you choose , they will be a conversation piece wherever you go this weekend !

Tarte Cosmetics recently unveiled their new summer 2011 bronzing products , and I thought it would be fun to use some suggestions from the new product additions as tools to re-creating Beyonce's new album "4" cover beauty look. It is part hard and strong with the eyes, yet the mouth is natural and bare, and the skin is sunkissed but not overkill with tons of shimmer.

How to recreate this look .....

For the eyes , three items from the product line can be used. Starting with the base color, Amazonian clay waterproof shadow pots in "beach bronze" , "moss" or "seashell pink" (depending on your skintone. Exclusively sold at QVC for $22.

Following the base shadow would be a hint of eyeliner Amazonian clay waterproof eyeliner duo - specifically using either "bronze" or if you want to make it your own look,"green" , also another QVC exclusive for $18.

Then the last step would be to use of the emphasEYES™ Amazonian clay waterproof eyeliner (black is shown) pots in either "bronze" or "brown" - although it is essentially an eyeliner, it smudges beautifully( I really love using this item), and given its packaging, and its texture - it is intended to be used as a multi-purpose item ( as a shadow). Its officially summer. Now is the time to go shopping for the perfect pair of fashionable girls shoes for your little one. With so many options out there that are minature replicas of the latest in Womens footwear , its hard to zero in on one specific style. For the budget conscious , its all about getting basic shoes that can be worn a number of places. While their "no budget is the best budget" counterparts , the style and color choice options are endless. Like these cute miniature gladiator sandals (pictured, above), would be a great choice for either group of shoppers. The gladiator style has been current for a while now as far as summer staples go, and having your mini diva in a pair is no where out of the norm. You can also opt for a more classic style something more along the lines of "traditional" kids footwear, if you don't want your little girl to be a fashion maverick just yet .. Another speedbump in the road of girls shoes is finding the perfect fit. A lot of times we dont actually purchase the right size shoe for young children, because they were not properly fitted for the shoe. Ever since the "Bandage Dress" by Hervé Léger made its way back into our fashion closets a few years back, they've never left. The last time "Bandages" were done with precision and great form was in the days of the "Mummy's" back in Egypt. These dresses are effortlessly chic , and can be both dressed down or up according to what you accent them with. There has been countless knockoffs that have gone into the market, but none of them can compare to the "original" . This picture does not do this shade any justice. This green/gold/orange metal fusion looks great on the nails, it almost gives the nails a hologram effect. Spring time is near , and the lil tot's need a new pair of baby shoes !!!! So not every kiddie Ages 6 and under has the authority or the access to a pair of made for tots louboutin-esque mini heels, but I just love the classic styles from our childhood past. Whether its Red, Pink, Purple,Blue, Brown, Black or White , Patent, Leather or Suede .. There is a nostalgia when I look at these shoes - back to when I was in grade school , when everything was so simple , sigghhhh. I would wear the leather styles to school, and the patent versions for special occasions / birthdays . Oh how I miss the days when children were dressed like.... Children! It all started with the OPI Black Shatter Top Coat ( pictured, above) - this nail couture in a bottle caused a frenzy. This amazing innovation where the Black Top Coat dries in a crackled, shattered glass effect on the nails , was the most wanted item in all over the country and web. A staple at Rickys NYC stores - this amazing nail effect has sold out and come back into stock in stores and online. Although I am a bit late, I wanted to put this Shatter top coat to the test - to see if it is as amazing as everyone claimed it to be.... It is!!! Theres something cosmic about the way the top coat dries into this cool effect, and at first I was not too keen on the Silver Shatter Top Coat ( Thank the Beauty Gods that OPI has added more shades to this top coat including : Silver, White, Blue, and Red) being paired on a light shade - I was going to suggest using a dark nail color. Ironically, I love it..I feel like its a subtle surprise once you look closely at my nails - I am excited to see how the silver will pair with a dark hue though. There is an edgy feeling to this effect, yet there is something very feminine and pretty about it as well - depending on the colors you use as a base coat. The lighter the shade ( pales, pastels, etc..) - is more girly/edgy, and I like neon base shades for a more rocker / punk look. Below you will find my detailed instructions as to how to re-create these stellar looks from the most important night in Fashion - which was celebrating Alexander McQueen this year ( Gisele Bundchen wore the late designer). Rihanna in Stella McCartney

Rihanna opted for a long braided style which featured two adjacent braids which met and became one Rapunzel-length braid. Known for being a risk-taker, this style was a risk well taken, and a very unexpected pairing for the hand-crafted lace nude illusion gown. This style can be easily re-created with the help of hair extensions ( in case you don't have waist-length hair , most of us don't ) . I would recommend using the 25" Layered Straight hair piece by Hairdo® , begin braiding one side , and hold it with a hair clip ( which will later be removed) then start to braid the alternate side. Take both sides and continue the long braid an use a very thin elastic the color of the hair ( so that it is transparent) you are using to secure the end of the braid.

With a dress that was high in drama ( it was reported that the songstress could barely walk without assistance), the hair was taking a classic statement and serving as an accessory to the beautiful piece of couture. Mostly spotted in long flowing waves or sleek straight locks, the night of the 2011 Met Costume Institute Gala Beyoncé wore her hair in a simple chignon with a part in the middle . It was a beautiful compliment to her dress. The young Hollywood Starlet looked all the part with this white dress and silver screen siren curls ( very 40's). It was a nice approach for the dress, yet Emma still manages to look her age. This look is very easy to create - with many options . Option 1: the use of thermal rollers and once removing them, hold the curls in place by pinning the hair in multiple sections. Once set, remove the pins and lightly brush the curls out. Option 2: you could use hair that is already curled ( this option is best if your hair is not as long, and also if you don't want to use too much heat styling tools on your hair.) - the 18” Clip-in Wavy Extension by hairdo® is a great option. You can like in option 1 , still pin curl the already wavy sections along with the pieces of your natural hair that's left out ,and continue like in option 1 to complete the style.

I like to think of it as beach hair with a "sophisticated twist". As with Emma's hair , this look can be created with the barrel curls , that are then set with pin-curls for hold. I was fortunate enough to sneak in a few questions with the ultra-busy world renowned Celebrity Nail Stylist Marian Newman after the release of her new signature line of MINX designs.

Legendary U.K. nail stylist Marian Newman has worked in almost every area of the nail industry, and can claim well over 50 British Vogue covers to her name as well as hundreds of other magazine covers and editorial stories.
'Marian Newman Nails' have been a fixture at countless fashion shows and other events in London and Paris, such as Givenchy, Vivienne Westwood, Valentino, Vercace, Moschino, McQueen, Gareth Pugh, Baradi, Fashion Rocks (with 150 models and 19 artists and bands) and the Alexander McQueen/Amex show.
Marian’s very first fashion show was to create 12” spiral nails for McQueen at Givenchy, and Marian also worked with Minx co-founders to create custom Minx nails for the designer’s last show, the S/S ’10 collection. Some of the celebrities for whom she has worked her nail magic include: Kate Moss, Giselle, Cheryl Cole, Nicole Kidman, Bjork, John Galliano, Liberty Ross, Sienna Miller, Rachel Weiss, Natalie Portman, Heather Mills-MacCartney, Linda Evangelista, Gwen Stefani, Cindy Crawford, Riley Keogh, Elle Macpherson, Terri Hatcher, Kate Winslet, Charlotte Rampling, Juliette Binoche, Kate Blanchette, Gynneth Paltrow, Keira Knightly, Kylie, Naomi Campbell and P Diddy, to name but a few.

Marian Newman Q&A:

1. Where did you draw inspiration from when creating your signature MINX collection? Was there any fashion influences? ( given your history of working with fashion designers)
The first designs I wanted to do were the ‘degrade’. I think this is a chic version of quite simple colour that is hard to achieve with polish. I was delighted when the Dior couture A/W ’11 had the exact effect! Those 2 were my ‘fashion’ designs. Designers often want nails that enhance or accessorise their collections rather than take too much focus away. These 2 designs would do that and they have the added bonus of being able to layer with them to change the look easily while still keeping the subtle fade of colour.

2. If you had to choose only one, what is your absolute favorite design from your new collection, and why?
That’s hard as I obviously love the all! I suppose it would have to be Longevity. (which I am wearing on my toes at the moment) It is the classic Minx gold that cannot be matched but then, when the light catches it, it is a prism of colour due to the Minxlusion being the symbols on the design. There is the surprise from people when this happens. But Plunge is quite special too! When you see the optical illusion that is created it is very weird!

3. Nails are very big in the UK, what are your favorite trends / designs that may have not crossed the pond over to the US yet? - It can be anything from nail shape, color, etc… Also what nail trends do you foresee for the spring /summer season?
There is a fabulous small chain of salons here called WAH and they are known for their excellent ‘street’ nails. There are also a couple of sessions technicians that are good at this type of nail (Sophy Robson and Jenny Longworth). These aren’t really my style of work but I love the inventiveness of them (http://www.wah-nails.com/). I think the trend this season is going to be anything and everything that has an ‘effect’ e.g the crackle effect polishes, glitters, magnetic nails, all forms of nails art and, of course, fabulous Minx’s

4. Do you feel that the women in the UK are more cutting edge and adventurous when it comes to their nails in comparison to women in the States, or do you think it’s a close tie?
A few years ago I would have said the exact opposite but the UK seem to be far more adventurous now! Sales of nails products have rocketed and salons are busier than they have ever been. I think it may be because we are just catching up with the US and there are so many new products and ideas.

5. If you could do Kate Middleton’s nails for the Royal Wedding, how would you do them?
The Royals are very conservative with their nails so I don’ t think this should change on a wedding day. She seems to have nice nails so I would have advised her to use a good nail oil daily for the last few weeks. For the day I would make sure they are beautifully buffed and a white pencil used under the free edge to give a clean and healthy look. I might use a clear top coat with a colour enhancer to make sure they look their absolute best but that is all.

The ponytail - Its a style that none of us are strangers to. Its the go-to style when you're having a not so great hair day, and also the same style for when you are trying to channel your sophisticated side as well. Last week during the second day of shows in Paris, Redken Creative Consultant , Guido gave us Ponytail-Envy with two variations of the universally common hair staple.

At Pedro Lourenco, the look was a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. “Pedro Lourenco is a young Brazilian designer and we collaborated on a very simple, style for this show to allow the clothes to really make the statement on the runway.” – Guido, Redken Creative Consultant

Minx co-founders Janice Jordan and Dawn Lynch-Goodwin were delighted to be part of the Gareth Pugh Autumn/Winter 2011 Collection which was shown in Paris on March 2, 2011. Leading U.K. nail stylist Marian Newman was initially contacted by the Gareth Pugh stylist, Katie Shillingford, who provided Marian with a swatch sample of the very specific waxy blue color she wanted for the show. Marian, in turn, contacted Janice and Dawn to request the custom color. “I was only able to provide Janice and Dawn with a copy of the swatch, but that was enough for them to create Minx in that exact shade,” explained Marian. “From that point, Janice, Dawn and I collaborated to develop three different nail designs revolving around the blue and gold colors central to the collection.”

A few days before the show, the designer made the decision to use the gold-framed waxy blue Minx which showed a flash of gold under the nail (pictured, above) , giving Marian and her team plenty of time to prepare. The complete nail featured gold underneath the nail, and a perfect gold frame on three sides, giving every model immaculate, matching nails complete with Marian’s “Parisian” shape.

The day of the show, both Janice and Dawn joined Marian and her team of David Barton, Helen Lisle-Taylor, Lucy Galsworthy, and Kimberley Casey backstage to assist in nail preparation.
