FHI Heat Domed Platform Iron

FHI Heat National Artistic Director Angel del Solar explains step-by-step how to recreate the glamorous hairstyles of actresses Kate Winslet, Sarah Jessica Parker, Vanessa Hudgens at the 81st Annual Oscars.

Presenter and Performer Vanessa Hudgens - Spiral Corkscrews

"Take 2 x 2 inch triangles, lightly saturate the hair with your favorite aerosol hairspray. Comb through the section to make sure hair is evenly distributed. With one hand, take entire section and twist to base. Place the FHI Heat 3/4" Curling iron underneath the section. Take the hair and wind around the FHI Heat 3/4" Curling iron. Hold for approximately 15 seconds - slide iron out and secure with the FHI Heat T-Rex Clips. Complete the entire head in this fashion. Let it all cool and remove clips. Apply approximately 1/2 a dime size of FHI Heat Hot Sauce to hands to emulsify - work through sections gently."

Presenter Sarah Jessica Parker - Luscious Waves

"Starting at side, taking horizontal sections. Place the FHI Heat Domed Platform Iron at the base, push with the iron forward and then move down hair shaft and pull with the Domed iron. Continue down each section until the entire head is complete."

Best Actress Nominee Kate Winslet- a1940s Inspired Style

"Using the FHI Heat 1 1/2" Curling iron starting from the front hairline working back to the top of the occipital bone. Create a horizontal parting from ear to ear. Sub-section to make curls going towards the nape. At the occipital bone, change direction, taking one row of curls in reverse direction. Brush out with FHI Heat Paddle Brush. Backcomb the hair, then set style in finish by pinning hair under like a bob, and spray with hairspray."

Best Hair in Show ...

Feb 12 - Alvin Valley

Inspiration : Mitford sisters - ( Pre-War times, circa 1930's) - privileged, and controversial society fixtures of their time.

The Look : Statement hair - that's soft, wearable and pretty but pretty with a twist. "Alvin's ideal woman is very polished, very finished - so her hair should reflect that" - says Donna Maggi National Artist for NIOXIN. "He wants the total look to be a nod to the '30s , but with modern flair. The idea is to look back and reflect on life with a certain bit of purpose and optimism."

Theodore Leaf, Celebrity Stylist for NIOXIN sectioning a models hair with spiral curls.

Setting the curls into finger waves - I just love the makeup at this show as well !!!

- The end result -

So Pretty !!!!!

Steps to Achieve this look at home :

  1. To give the hair its guts and structure, apply Volumizing Reflectives Spray Gel to the entire head and loosely blow dry.
  2. Section out 3-4 layers of spiral curls in the back of the head, alternating direction for each row.
  3. Spray Volumizing Reflectives Niospray Extra Hold to each section before ironing, then twist into a spiral curl. After it’s set, keep the curls intact but hide pins so they’re not visible.
  4. For the front, use the same technique—but with barrel curls—and then finger wave.
  5. Finish with a side part and work the finger waves into the pin curls in the back.

Products used : Volumizing Reflectives Spray Gel, Volumizing Reflectives Niospray Power Hold, Smoothing Reflectives Pure Shine Gel, Volumizing Reflectives Sculpting Gel.

ZOYA Shines at New York Fashion Week

Feb 19 - Leanne Marshall

Leanne along with manicurist Jackie Saulsberry picked Zoya color "Richelle" ( golden metallic shade - pictured above) for the models to wear. Below Jackie is pictured with Leanne, also some shots of "Richelle" being applied on some of the models.

Feb 18 - Tory Burch

The look was "au natural" - Jackie and her team prepped the nails with Qtica Smart Spa Anti-Bacterial Spray - then coated the nails with the Zoya Color lock System (Remove + , Anchor Base Coat, Armor Top Coat and Hurry Up Speed Dry Drops) - notice an actual lacuer was not applied - hence, the super glossy nude nail. The nude nails were perfection against the edgy streetwear looks.

(applying the Armor Top Coat to a models nails)

I would love to own this entire look!

Feb 15- Toni Maticevski

The clothes ( as you will see below) were just spectacular !!!! Dhav Naidu ( creative director of the show) had manicurist Skyy Hadley and her As You Wish Spa team layer "Collette" over "Yasmeen" to create a very sexy nail color. The models nails look divine against the stellar designs.

This is one of my favorite looks !!

Feb 13 - Ohne Titel

The designs were VERY VERY black .. and the boots were leather and thigh length .. the perfect nail to accompany such a look was a nude nail. Jackie used "Gretchen" and "Dea" on the models.

I Love this !!

Feb 12 - Rachel Roy

Zoya was the official nail care sponsor at the Rachel Roy Fashion Presentation. Jackie graced the nails of the models in "Tasha" a shade she refers to as the "perfect nude nail polish" . "Tasha" compliments the soft colors of the line perfectly.

OCC Cosmetics at Fashion Week

Show : Geren Ford

Inspiration : Leather, Sex Kitten, Sultry, Dangerous, Spontaneous, Risk Taker

Artist : Stephanie Flores

In her own words :

"When Geren Ford asked me to Key the direction of the Makeup for the second Season I was not blown away for the opportunity but by the inspiration behind the collection and the important connection to the makeup, hair and clothing!!!
Models were lined up on a stage with the NYC Hudson river as their backdrop.

Makeup was very smoked out on the lid. We wanted to add depth and inner darkness to the flawless face. Using airbrush foundation we were able to achieve the most natural coat which gave us the freedom to focus on the eyes and create a seduction of blending the blacks. The lips were nude in color and the eyebrows were concealed with a lighter foundation using a brow brush. Cheeks were left natural with only contour as the separation on the cheeks.
"

Stephanie's Everyday Girl Tip on creating the runway look of Geren Ford Fall 2009 :

" This is definitely not a day look but if your looking to have a good time after hours, this look is the right key to getting you noticed. My tip for an everyday kind of girl is to not go over the crease of the eye, the higher you go on the crease the more the eye will push back. if you just want that sexy smokey eye just blend - blend the darkest black up to the crease and then with a Kohl Liner like Urban Decay Black , line your inner and upper rim from thin to thick on to the edge of the eye. And always mascara mascara mascara.. try Lash Blast from Loreal its amazing. Also play around with color.A great way to add this effect without it being too black is by using a colorful shadow on the inner part of the eye. My favorite shadows to use are the Yaby Pearl Paints which are pigmented like no other in the market. Check them out at http://www.yabycosmetics.com/shop/ . By playing with color you're able to always have a sexy flirty eye without being to mysterious."

Q & A With Tippi Shorter

I was recently lucky enough to ask Tippi Shorter (pictured, above) , celebrity colorist for Clairol Professional Beautiful Collection who counts Alicia Keys among her many famous clients, her step-by-step process for achieving Alicia's sleek look for the Neighborhood Inauguration Ball on Jan. 20th in D.C. as well as some other questions for Spring / Summer season.

( Alicia Keys - pictured , at the inauguration )

What was the look you were trying to achieve with Alicias look (inspiration) , and what was the steps used to achieve this style ?

1. Alicia spent most of last year on tour and her hair endured a lot being under stage lights almost every night. I felt her hair was lacking some of its natural beautiful luster, and the best way to help restore shine, luster and vibrancy was to give her a semi permanent hair color in her natural color of medium warm brown using Beautiful Collection.

2. After the color, I shampooed and conditioned with my Pantene Moisture Renewal and used a light spray leave-in to detangle.

3. I blow-dried her on medium heat using a Denman Brush to get her hair super straight and super flat.

4. I used a 2 inch flatiron to smooth her hair and created a part in the center and finished her hair with a light shine spray and a light hold hairspray so it maintained movement while she performed.

What tips do you suggest to those on a budget in achieving Hollywood worthy hair sans the Hollywood budget?

Hollywood hair is about glamour, health, and a lot of personal attitude.

Glamour- giving your hair lots of body on a budget is pretty easy. You can use hot rollers for about 10 mins to give your hair major bounce without the headache of sitting at a salon for 2 hours getting a blowout.

Health- getting a good haircut is important, and having amazing shine is the sign of health. If you need to get shine, you can try an at home semi permanent hair color like Clairol Beautiful Collection to maximize shine and it will give your hair an added boost of color too.

Which celebrities hair do you admire ?

I really like Gwen Stefani and Mary J. Blige.

What is the Spring / Summer style forecasts for 2009 - What do you see as being the new "trend" in hair ?

Hair will go back short about shoulder bob length. Natural wave is big, but, the pin straight has a place this spring also.
